Shirodhara Pilot Observations In Anidra (Insomnia)

Abstract
Stressors  like  too  much  noise,  light,  heat,  cold,  caffeine,  jet-lag,  excitement,  anxiety  of  pain, change  in  sleeping  hours,  anxiety  disorders  or  depression  cause  insomnia.  A  vicious  circle  develops  between sleeplessness  and  fear  for  trying  to  go  to  sleep.  When  insomnia  is  a  chronic  condition  drugs  are  less  effective. Ayurvedic  treatment  (Shirodhara)  is  advisable  in  such  conditions.  In  simple  stress  situations  (without  a  real psychiatric  disorder)  short  term  insomnia  may  develop  and  Shirodhara  may  be  useful  as  it  alleviates  stress and  gives  passive  relaxation.  20  Patients  of    Anidra  (Insomnia)    due  to  headache,  Anxiety  Neurosis  and other  psychological  disorders  were  selected  and  administered  shirodhara  for  7  days.  Symptomatic improvement  in  induction  and  duration  of  sleep  was  observed  after  treatment.  The  patients  also  felt  more calm  and  relaxed.  Their  anxiety  levels  also  lowered  down.
