Abstract
Antiquity of ophthalmic use of medicinal plants goes back to the period of 1000 B.C.. A mention of different analgesic ophthalmic drugs is found in Garudapurana. The present work aims at exposition of hidden knowledge about single ophthalmic plant drugs indicated in ocular pain scattered elsewhere in ancient and medieval Ayurvedic literature and to impart the basic knowledge concerning these drugs which forms a base for further research and revalidation. A special attention has also been made to analyse these drugs based on Pharmacodynamic/ kinetic principles mentioned in Ayurvedic pharmacology, to arrive rational conclusions concerning the probable mode of action of these agents and creating possible basis for formulation of strategy for developing appropriate topical drops and oral dosage forms to achieve ocular analgesia without adverse effects.
