Abstract
Leeches, popularly known as jalauka in ayurveda, are described in all the three major compedium of ayurveda. Leeches, through a blissful dispensation of nature in themselves, insticntly draws off the vitiated blood from a diseased part, attacking the healthy vital fluid when the former has been completely tapped or sucked. Being cool and sweet , or soothing in nature, it is mainly indicated in pitta dominated diseases. Ayurvedic physicians use leeches for the management of skin diseases, granthi, sopha etc. Now a days, modern surgeons also use leeches in chronic non-healing ulcers, varicose vein, deep venous thrombosis etc. This paper briefly discusses the uses of medicinal plants.
