Healing art of Kani Tribe of Kerala - I - Sudorification (Medicated Steam Bath)

Abstract
Kanis, are one of the forest-dwelling tribes of kerala mostly found in the Travancore region of the western ghat. Ethnically the tribe shows a racial origin having Dravidian, Veddoid and negrito features. The tribal physician among the 'Kanis' is known as 'plathi' - who is the repository of medical wisdom. They usually treat the patients with herba, animal products and minerals. Wtchcraft and rituals are also practised to cure diseases which they believe occurs due to the influence of evil spirits. No proper scientific documentation of this knowledge system has been done by any research worker so far. An intensive survey carried out by the authors revealed that the healing art techniques of kanis are now in an almost ruined state and the knowledge on medicinal herbs are limited to the few of the older generation. In this paper 'sudorification' (A kind of medicated steam bath) for various dermatological conditions including psoriasis is highlighted. The method of treatment and the drugs used have been discussed.
