Abstract
Kāla has got an unique concept and importance in Indian philosophy. Āyurveda has considered kāla as a kāraṇadravya which means the cause of origination of substances. Kāla is one of the chief causes behind the changes occur in the universe also. The significance of kāla is clearly mentioned in āyurveda to assess the vyādhikriyākāla, vyādhicikitsā and auṣadhisevana at specific time, regimens of dincaryā, ṛtucaryā, rātricaryā, āhārapariṇāmakāla (stages of digestion), saptadhātupoṣaṇakāla (process of nourishment), vitiation of doṣa according to vayaḥ and ṛtucaryā, process of ageing, development change in body organ etc. has been mentioned and got importance. Kāla has been divided into two, nityaga and āvasthika. Nityaga refers to the daily and seasonal changes depends upon solar movements while āvasthika refers to stages of disease and diseased. In this way all the aspect of health and disease i.e. its origin, pathogenesis and its management comes under the control of kāla. Present paper discusses various important aspects of kāla in āyurveda.
