Sudesh Gaidhani
,
Abstract
Idivallathi mezhugu, which is a combination of fifteen ingredients, has been used since long as antiarthritic in siddha medicine. The drug was screened for anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities in different suitable pharmacological experimental models. The study confirmed the anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Idivallathi mezhugu claimed in the Siddha medicine by orally treating to rats. Carrageenin induced rat paw oedema was significantly (P <0.01) suppressed in an inversely dose dependent manner by Idivallathi mezhugu. In the hot plate test all the doses employed showed significant (P<0.05) and directly dose-dependent analgesic activity. Where as in the dose of 300 mg/kg showed 222 maximum analgesic score at 60 minute, which was found to be highly significant (P<0.001). In the formalin test, 300and 1000 mg/kg of Idivallathi mezhugu significantly (P<0.001) suppressed the pain in early phase only. These observations revealed that the Idivallathi mezhugu has anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities.
